It somehow doesn’t seem right that I’ve lived here this long and never bothered to learn how to make it before.

I’d advise using a whisk instead of a fork — it keeps the whole experience much less lumpy.

I would say, “It’s just like making a roux,” except then I would be outing myself as a total kitchen nerd. And I’m not ready for that yet.
