It’s 7:28 a.m., 57° and headed to only 59°, but it looks almost clear — for the moment. Details are here.

What’s happening today at the Mission City College campus? The Peruvian elections! Expect thousands to vote today in the presidential race between Ollanta Humala, a colonel who lost in the 2006 election, and Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Albert Fujimori, now in jail. Voting is compulsory. Here is your background on the polarized election.

The California Dream Act is making its way to Governor Brown’s desk. It was approved by an appropriations committee, 11 to 5, and goes next to the Senate. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed it twice, but Brown may just sign it into law — a huge step for undocumented students who would then be eligible for state aid. There’s more on this here.

The SF Chronicle reminds us that today is the 30th anniversary of the AIDS crisis.

My advice for the day — get out early for a walk. lc

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
