The NY Times had two important stories. First, the government is changing directions on Secure Communities, the national program under which anyone who is arrested has their fingerprints run through a national database. Its use has resulted in a jump in deportations. Immigration officials are going to limit the deportations to those undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes.
Second, while comprehensive immigration reform is unlikely until after the presidential election, two bills are being considered. One would require that all employers use e-verification; the other would allow more green cards for math and science graduates. Read the full story here.
