It’s 7 a.m., 51° and going to 68°. Details are here.

The Tomato Tart’s online bake sale brought in $8,269 for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

And the Tart’s not stopping: Sabrina Modelle reports, “Many have also asked if they can still donate if they did not win their bid, so I found a way to do that! Let’s keep the momentum going until we reach $10,000. As a matter of fact, I will bake any of the sweets on my blog or work with you to create something to your liking for the person who makes the largest donation. This will only last through June 10, 2011.” Click here to help out.

More on food:

Free fry bread at El Rio on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, reports Uptown Almanac.

Root Division, the arts and education nonprofit, will be raising money with food on April 14 at its Taste 2011, reports Taste SF.

The grilled cheese sandwich is still hot, reports 7×7, and the Mission District will have its own to offer at the new Mission Cheese opening later this month on Valencia Street.

Eat well, lc

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
