At 9:46 this morning a reader wrote in with this:

What was up with the major police activity all over 23rd and Folsom this morning? There had to have been 20+ cops crawling all over the playground and adjacent warehouse on Folsom? I take my 22 month old to this park all the time and am curious what was going on!

We called SFPD media relations. They hadn’t heard of anything happening at 23rd and Folsom. We called the Mission Police Station, making sure to say that we’d called media relations first, because they get cranky if we don’t do that. They hadn’t heard anything either.

Then, at 10:44 this goes up on Mission Mission:

A police chase just ended outside my window. The truck… smashed in to the toyota and the dude took off running. He hopped a fence into parque ninos unidos. Cops everywhere. For a while there were police on the rooftop next to the park with what looked like assault rifles.

I later saw a handcuffed guy being taken away in an ambulance, so I guess they caught the driver…

This sounded incredibly exciting. Handcuffs! Bad guys caught!

We called SFPD and Mission again. Still no word.

And, as of 4:32 pm, neither department (or at least the people answering the phones) is talking.

Here’s to (maybe) finding out what happened in the police report tomorrow…

  1. Says the excellent Albie Esparza:

“The recap we send out in the morning consist of the major violent crimes that occured over night, robberies, stabbings, homicides, home invasion, etc. or major life threatening accidents.”

He’s still trying to find out what exactly dude was arrested for – but it looks like it wasn’t for robbing, stabbing, or shooting someone. Or for walking into anyone’s home.

Those interested in the non-stabbing crimes of the Mission can sign up for the Mission Police Station’s monthly newsletter here: http://www.sf-police.org/index.aspx?page=3323. And the next Mission Station/Mission residents community meeting is at the station March 29th, 6pm.

  2. Hello all,

Albie Esparza, over at the SFPD media relations, says this:

“It was a wanted person that lead officers on a chase. The incident was listed as 17th/Capp Streets where the incident began at 8:38am.

At 23rd/Folsom the vehicle crashed and the suspect fled on foot. After a perimeter was set up and several officers searching the area, the suspect was found and placed under arrest.”

So: fairly straightforward. Still not sure why it didn’t make it into Thursday’s police report even as 17th and Capp, but am working on that.

And Roza: in a situation like this, where we have a lot of readers writing in, I would rather be honest about what we don’t know than simply not writing anything at all.

One of our dreams is to have a full-time crime reporter – this town doesn’t have many these days.

  3. A friend works at Chavez Elementary at 23rd and Folsom. She mentioned that the school was on lock-down briefly because of a police action.

      1. Yes, you are right: the front door to the school is on Shotwell. The school grounds, however, extend through the entire block to Folsom Street, where there are gates.

  5. Hello, Mission Local. When you are journalists, you have press credentials, you develop contacts within the pollice department and you nurture the relationship. These people answer your questions or find out who can. You know what to do when information is needed and you serve your public that way. You don’t just sit there with them scratching your head. WHEN YOU ARE JOURNALISTS.

    1. Roza: You’re right and we’ve been working our contacts and we’ve also had great input from the community. Mission Loc@l can only do so much. We are a community site and of course, we want to do more, but this is your site so we appreciate hearing from what others have discovered. Best, Lydia

  6. I guess the essence of the story here is that some sort of police action went down, as observed by some members of the public, but the cops aren’t talking to the media about it. But I’m mystified by the headline: “Mysterious Police Party…” What are you trying to say by calling this action a “party?”

  7. I also live on Folsom st where it all happend. I didn’t see any guy running but I did see black and white cop and narc vehicles (undercover cops) all over the place. I would also like to know what happend. My brother attends Cesar Chavez elemantary and I often take him and niece to play at the park mention in the report. It’s a scary thought there might be a cover up here.

    1. Kevin,
They seem to genuinely not know. And it wasn’t in the police report this morning. Maybe it was an FBI party?
