Viola and Ernesto

Hey Kids! is a weekly feature looking at what’s coming up for families and kids of all ages.

I have a passion for weather. Every nimbus, drop and ray excites me and affects me. My 6 year old, Ernesto, shares this obsession. The first words we exchange in the morning, after cuddles and kisses, are an assessment of what the gods of climate have in store for the day.

Ernesto struggling with decidedly unfriendly NYC weather

He recently scolded me for having told him as a toddler that when the sun disappeared, it was because it was running errands, and the moon or the clouds were holding its spot. “I know now mamma, because I read it and I studied it. Why didn’t you tell me the truth that it has to do with the rotation of the earth and the meteorology and blah blah blah…”

Really, who was listening at this point? I was just marveling at this fiercely independent, remarkably smart and delightfully annoying creature I have somehow managed to raise.

And while plucking an anthology from the wealth of choices of weekend’s family to dos, it came to me that in the wondrous and challenging mission of rearing Ernesto, the Husband and I have the best of partners in this very community, the Mission, that so deeply cares for the inquiring minds and hopeful hearts of the next generations.

To all of you who, like me, choose to carry on their mission…in the Mission and to our lively, engaged children, I tip my hat.

Enjoy the weekend.

YOUNG WOMEN DANCING
Dance Mission’s Grrrl Brigade presents Dancing on the Edge of the World, A People’s History of the United States through Dance. The show plays through the weekend and is open to all ages, though the staff suggests that it might be better suited for children 6 and up.

NOT OF HERE BUT NOT TO MISS
This weekend, in San Mateo, is the yearly Maker Faire, the world’s largest DIY festival. Learn, create, invent, recycle, build, play, eat…I took Ernesto last year, and he has been doing a countdown to the next one since. By the way, here’s how to get there without getting stuck in traffic.
