Learn how to build bamboo fences on site with Lauri Twitchell and Peter Sucheki of the UC Berkeley Blake Garden of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Workshop is today from 1-3pm at Sangati Center on 22nd and Shotwell. Cost is $5-$15 sliding scale.
(Speaking of bamboo, I love the new sidewalk extension with bamboo decking on 22nd and Bartlett. I checked it out on a wet day and was delighted that I didn’t have to wipe down the bench or parklet my posterior upon a dual function mackintosh square [plastic bag] — my kid and I remained high and dry. Where my family comes from, the coconut tree is “the tree of life” and bamboo is hailed likewise for its versatile uses… like making musical instruments and cars. Its the fastest growing woody plant in the world, with a tensile strength greater than mild steel, able to withstand compression better than concrete and — as we’ve now seen — transform excess roadway in a single bound.)
