Marianna Belmares said she was taking a nap today in Dolores Park when she awoke just after 3 p.m. to see her friend being tackled by police near the tennis courts. Within minutes, three police cars showed up and her 18-year-old friend, Dante, was detained.

Police declined to say why.

One witness said he saw the young man running through the park with a policeman in pursuit. Another witness said he saw the policeman trip while pursuing the young man, who jumped over picnickers as he ran down the hill. The chase and arrest were “pretty theatrical,” the witness said.

Belmares said that before she dozed off, Dante had been at her side. The park was still crowded, but no one seemed to know what started the chase.

  1. Please, do follow up on this. There are many things that a hipster is permitted to do, but that a teenager of color will get arrested for.

    1. Oh! I thought Dante is a hipster name. I didn’t read in the article that it was a colored teen. Todd, do you have info that is not in the post?

  2. It would be interesting to get some follow-up on this story. Since pretty much no rules seem to be enforced in the park (drinking, drugs, fighting, smoking, off leash dogs, etc). I’m sure Dante was up to something, and why run if you didn’t do anything — though I did see the Park Police detain an old man who was digging holes after scanning the ground with a metal dector while all sorts of other illegal activities are completely tolerated.
