This from the SFPD:
The San Francisco Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying and apprehending an attempted kidnapping suspect in an incident that occurred on Monday, February 13, at approximately 8:15 A. M. In this incident, the suspect approached the victim, an eight-year-old girl, at Oakdale Avenue and Keith Street, as she was walking to Carver Elementary School at that location.

The suspect grabbed the victim from behind and put his hand over her mouth, saying something to the effect that he picks out young children as his victims. The victim struggled and broke free, running to safety inside the school.

The suspect is described as an African American male in his 30s, with a heavy build and distinctive short dreadlock style braids. He has a scar on his upper right cheek. He was wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans. He had a square-shaped earring in his left ear lobe. He was also wearing a handkerchief covering his lower face.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Inspector Vince Repetto of the Sexual Assault Detail at 415-553-9117 or 415-553-1361. Citizens may also contact the SFPD Anonymous Tip Line, 415-575-4444, or the text tip line, TIP411, referencing SFPD in the subject line.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
