Peruvians in the the Bay Area came to City College’s Mission campus today to vote in the second and presumably final round of their country’s presidential race. It’s been one of the country’s most contested elections.
The campus was one of several polling places around the United States.
Ollanta Humala, a colonel who lost in the 2006 election, is up against Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who is currently in jail. Voting is compulsory and those who don’t vote are fined $60. How do they fine those in the United States? The non-voters are caught when they file for a new passport, one Peruvian said today.
Much of the election controversy revolved around two people who were not even running for office: Alberto Fujimori and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. Keiko Fujimori tried to connect Humala to Chávez, while Humala focused on the Fujimori in prison. Fujimori’s opponents said Alberto was running his daughter’s campaign from jail. Her headquarters were, in fact, not far from his jail cell.
Early exit polls showed Humala ahead, but no one expects the election to be called until every vote is counted.
Humala won with 51.5% of the vote.
