Several blocks south, reporter Garret McAuliffe brings us three very moving essays from children of the Mission Education Center.

This will be the first Thanksgiving they will celebrate in this country, and for some the first one with their families.

As an immigrant myself I can relate to their stories. I did not live with my dad until I was eight.

Thanksgiving with my family has been anything but conventional. It is a tradition for my family to gather outside as my dad grills carne asada and my mom warms up the corn tortillas.

I am not sure what they will do this year since the apartment complex where they live recently banned outdoor grilling.

But in all seriousness, I am thankful for parents who sacrifice their entire lives to give their children opportunity. I am thankful for them every day.
