The weekend could start with a film at the Mission Cultural Center at 7 p.m. Against the Grain: An Artist’s Survival Guide to Peru.

Onto the Verdi Club or start at the Verdi Club for Flamenco with ODC Theater and Caminos Flamencos  with shows at 8, 9 and 10.

Or for the more sedate, dog lovers, it’s the Dog Days of Summer at Odd Ball Films, 275 Capp St. Between 17th & 18th Streets.

Saturday, the 8th, Start at 10 am. at Mission Pie at 25th and Mission St. with a landscaping party.  Or better yet, start with one of their scones.  Just had a walnut scone this morning. Best scones in town.

Then move on to a free movie at Potrero Del Sol skate board park.

Sunday, the 9th

At  7 p.m. the  Community Music Center, 544 Capp@ near 20th St. has tango harmonica.

And at   8pm, ODC at 351 Shotwell bewteen 17th and 18th Streets has a concert featuring the latest music of the European avant-garde to the grittiest sounds of the West Coast Improv-Underground.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable.
