The Mission Loc@l team thanks everyone who came out last night and helped make our photo show a success! We were thrilled to see new and familiar faces. L’s Caffe was buzzing. People were checking out photos, raising bids, and all seemed to be having a great time. Outside, Manuel and his band played and some ML reporters were even spotted dancing outside–yes, I admit it, I was one of them. And a big thank you to the wonderful team at L’s Caffe.

The street food revolution is already well underway in the Mission and we’re excited to hear that there is a new addition–cookies and ice cream sandwiches. If you try some, let us know!

Nancy Pelosi seems to be having trouble remembering some things lately. A few weeks ago, the speaker of the House said that she knew that the US was using “enhanced interrogation techniques” on Al-Quaeda operatives. Unfortunately for Pelosi, documents now show that she was told in 2002. The Washington Post reports “in a 10-page memo outlining an almost seven-year history of classified briefings, intelligence officials said that Pelosi and then-Rep. Porter Goss (R-Fla.) were the first two members of Congress ever briefed on the interrogation tactics.”

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

At ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
