Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

Well, it was a dramatic day at the Planning Commission.

Mayor Lurie‘s policy chief for housing asked the commissioners to vote Sarah Dennis Phillips in to replace Rich Hillis as the next planning director, before they’d even done a candidate search. Dennis Phillips is known to be highly qualified, but circumventing a commission’s process, writes Joe Eskenazi, is a “blueprint for …insularity, inefficiency, provincialism and self-dealing.

Three planning commissioners walked out during the closed-session meeting to appoint the new director. The remaining commissioners voted to nominate Dennis Phillips, and then Lurie formally appointed her.

See Xueer Lu’s exit interview with the former planning director Rich Hillis.

Despite a packed room opposing it, the SFMTA board has backed Mayor Lurie’s plan to remove RVs from the street, and will send the proposal to the supervisors. Families who live in RVs said they are one of the few sources of safe, inexpensive housing left in the city.

More soon,

Sara
