Good afternoon!
We’ve got a lot of news on this rainy Friday––much of it related to housing (and the lack thereof.)
At a passionate community meeting last night, neighbors challenged a proposal to put temporary “tiny homes” for the Mission’s unhoused on the 16th Street plaza. Many residents objected, saying the cabins would endanger nearby Marshall Elementary students. An exasperated Hillary Ronen said complaints about homeless encampments couldn’t be addressed without somewhere for people to go. The Supervisor finally conceded that the project may not go through.
Tenants in five units were displaced by a deadly January fire started by squatters in Potrero Hill. Remaining residents are caught in a “public housing netherworld” where it appears no one is responsible for their safety while the site awaits redevelopment. Will long-term residents be forced out by the conditions?
And San Francisco has passed its state-approved Housing Element, with plans for 82,000 new homes. But houses aren’t built by wishful thinking.
Start the weekend off with free tamales at the resource fair run by Calle 24 from 5:30-7 tonight on the 24th Street plaza. And check out more Stuff to Do, including art exhibits, a tasty fundraiser for El Rio, and the ongoing San Francisco Independent Film Festival.
Stay dry,
Sara
