It’s end-of-year giving season—and we have matching funds.

Good afternoon! There’s a lot going on today.

We take a closer look at the lives of hot-dog vendors, most of whom make around $10 or less an hour after their bosses take half their earnings–and the city takes their carts.

2023 looks like it’ll be SF’s deadliest year ever for overdoses. Mission Local’s covered the impact of the drug epidemic on politics, policing, and community. Today, Annika Hom writes about what UCSF doctors have found to be effective addiction medicine.

SFUSD has once again failed to pay teachers. The district is supposed to pass through $5000 stipends from the state to the most highly-credentialed teachers in the city— but now, after delays in payment, the checks have bounced.

Update: A hung jury in the case against Jose Corvera resulted in a mistrial, after jurors questioned the legality of SFPD actions. Cops stopped Corvera for riding a bike on the sidewalk, then sprayed Shotwell St. with bullets after Corvera fired a fake gun. Corvera was found guilty only of brandishing an imitation firearm.

We’re so proud of the awards Mission Local just won. The awards are gratifying, but the support of our readers is what makes Mission Local possible. Thank you for donating: Our survival as a truly independent, nonprofit newsroom depends on you.

More soon,

Sara
