Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Sad news: Ricardo “El Tigre” Peña, whose Danza Azteca troupe was a fixture for decades at Mission celebrations and Carnaval, has died. Oscar Palma talks with neighbors about Peña’s devotion to the community.

In immigration news, Sage Ríos Mace reports that attorneys allege ICE officials have moved immigrants to a different floor of their S.F. facility, in order to circumvent a court order to improve “inhumane” conditions in the holding cells.

In a separate case, Bay Area attorneys are awaiting a decision in their argument to stop ICE from making courthouse arrests of immigrants who show up to asylum hearings in San Francisco and face “a horrendous Catch-22.”

Back and forth: San Francisco’s public defenders say the DA’s office is improperly withholding evidence in nearly half its misdemeanor trials. DA Brooke Jenkins‘ office denies the allegations and says it’s the public defender who delays giving evidence to the prosecution. Abigail Vân Neely looks into the cases.

For back story, see what’s behind the rise in prosecutions of misdemeanor cases that’s overwhelming courts.

More soon,
