Good afternoon!

Our tagline, local news for a global city, feels more pertinent than ever as the war in Israel and Palestine continues to reverberate through diasporic communities. Thousands of protesters shut down the Central Freeway this weekend, calling for an end to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Last week a Jewish-owned ice cream store in the Mission was vandalized with pro-Palestinian graffiti, and students walked out of SF high schools to support a ceasefire.

Then there are those who move here from around the world hoping to make their fortunes. Yujie Zhou writes about the latest tech boom of AI entrepeneurs who hunt for funding and connections through a network of house parties, AI social events and hacker houses.

And some people aren’t going anywhere. As San Francisco cracks down on drug dealingโ€”and drug usersโ€”the city will re-open a 300-bed annex of its jail in San Bruno. Sheriffs say they’re understaffed for the growing number of inmates, and want to build a new jail.

Help us keep local and global news real.

More soon,

Sara
