Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Hey, we have great news! Mission Local won a $1.5 million grant from the American Journalism Project, which backs nonprofit news organizations across the country. Read about how we’re planning to use the grant to strengthen our work.

Mosser Companies told tenants displaced by fire from Tenderloin apartments that their personal belongings may be sold at auction if not claimed in two weeks. Tenants say that when they were offered “supervised” visits to go get their property, valuables were missing.

In other housing news, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood charged that the city โ€œlost trackโ€ of about $5 million sitting in an account waiting to be used for an affordable housing project in the Tenderloin.

For the back story, read Elena Balakrishnan’s reporting on how that project got stuck in limbo.

And here’s some interesting data: The rate of violent crimes and robberies fell sharply last year in San Francisco, as it did nationwide. But the rate of increase in drug offenses jumped a striking 54%. Are there more drug offenses in our city, or more arrests?

More soon,

Sara
