Good afternoon!
Well, the strike is on—and public schools will be shut tomorrow as well. Teachers picketed this morning in front of 130 closed schools across San Francisco, and rallied at City Hall. Meanwhile, negotiators for the union and the district packed their toothbrushes for late-night bargaining sessions. Our reporters are covering all the action: stay tuned for live updates.
And here’s the back story: an excellent explainer from Marina Newman on where the teachers union and the district differ on the major issues being negotiated.
You should also read Joe Rivano Barros on Mayor Daniel Lurie‘s unsuccessful last-minute appeal for a 72-hour delay of the strike. The union, which has been negotiating for a year, said no.
More soon,
Sara
