Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Breaking: A social worker at San Francisco General Hospital was stabbed by a patient this afternoon; follow us for updates.

San Francisco’s public school teachers voted 99.34% yesterday to authorize a strike, following nearly nine months of fruitless contract negotiations. It’s the first of two votes requiredโ€”but at this point, reports Junyao Yang, the teachers say they’re “pushed to the edge.”

The back story is harsh: Mission Local obtained early budget proposals from the district calling for deep cuts to plug a $113 million deficit, including layoffs of security guards and school counselors. The district already made $114 million in cuts last year.

Speaking of unions, the new D4 supervisor Alan Wong rose in politics through his involvement with unions. Read why he’s on shaky ground now with former labor allies, and why they may back his progressive rival Natalie Gee in June’s special election.

More soon,

Sara
