Good afternoon!

Last month, the S.F. Board of Education unanimously rejected a proposed SFUSD budget with a dire $102 million in cuts, but Superintendent Maria Su just re-submitted the same plan, sending prinicpals into “panic.” Details from Marina Newman on the staffing cuts and layoffs proposed by the district.

Firefighters are more likely to get or die from cancer than most people, reports Abigail Vรขn Neely. A retired S.F. firefighter whose insurer refused to pay for his cancer treatment is asking the Health Service Board, which negotiates city workers’ insurance contracts, to override the denial.ย

Mariana Garcia has the story of the art professor who sketches the proceedings at S.F. immigration court.

And Eleni Balakrishnan has the buzz on the Tenderloin, where a new strip club is coming to the historic O’Farrell Theatre, and the city has settled with the owner of a spa illegally operating a brothel.ย Read what else is going on.

More soon,

Sara

P.S. Hey, can you help? Aย Mission Local reporter needs to rent a 1-bedroom apartment or in-law unit โ€”preferably in the Mission, Bernal Heights, Dolores Heights, the Castro, Glen Park, Lower Haight, Cole Valley or Western Additionโ€”with good light, washer/dryer, and, ideally, access to outdoor space. Small-landlord or owner-occupied listings especially welcome. Please send tips and rental details toย info@missionlocal.com. Thanks!
