Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

Police officers at Mission Station sent out department-wide emails soliciting colleagues to work overtime out of the mobile command unit parked at the 16th St. BART plaza.ย The assignment? “To keep the van safe, free from vandalism.” But, Joe Eskenazi explains, the two cops earning overtime in the gigantic parked vehicle will also “address quality of life issues in the area.”

Mission Local is sticking with this story: We want to hold the city accountable to its promises to improve conditions at the plaza, and are continuing to photograph the goings-on there every day. If you have photos to share, please send them and the date taken to info@missionlocal.com with the subject heading 16th Street.

Tomorrow is Transit Operator Day on Muni, and Mc Allen, a bus driver who really loves his job, wants you to jump on board. His goal: Increase the number of trips on Tuesday March 18 to 550,000, and get occasional riders to become regulars.

But even as Muni struggles, Waymo is making inroads: the robotaxi company just struck a deal with the city to start “mapping” SFO in preparation for offering its driverless rides there. Read the fine print.

More soon,

Sara
