Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

The S.F. Department of Public Health announced preliminary cuts of $17 million, mostly to training programs for community organizations. DPH’s director Daniel Tsai said that his priority is protecting direct health and clinical services.

Mayor Daniel Lurie has expanded free and subsidized child care for middle-income families making up to $310,000 a year. But in a city that has fewer kids per capita than any other major U.S. city, will enough parents take up the offer?

S.F. supervisors said an academic study proved that a curfew for convenience stores in the Tenderloin had reduced crimeโ€”and voted to extend the late-night ban to SoMa. But authors of the study disagreed, and said the curfew may simply have caused crime to spill over into other neighborhoods.

For the back story, see our 2024 report on Tenderloin residents’ responses to the original curfew.

More soon,

Sara
