Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Dacari Spiers, 36, whose 2019 beating by a police officer led to the first criminal case against an SF cop for on-duty brutality, has been identified as the victim of a Mission homicide. Spiers was gunned down near 15th and Wiese on Saturday.ย

Mission Local’s Eleni Balakrishnan covered Spiers’ 2019 beating, which led to historic criminal charges from then-DA Chesa Boudin, a highly politicized battle between the DA’s office and the SFPD, an acquital of the officer involved, and a $700,000 settlement to Spiers from the city. For the full back story, check out the reporting, read Joe Eskenazi on the “Dirty Harry vibe of the case, and take a peek inside Eleni’s reporter’s notebook.

We talked with residents and business owners about Mayor Breed’s proposed Tenderloin convenience store curfew, intended to stop late-night crowds and drug deals. Most were supportive, though surprised that stores with state liquor licenses will be exempt from closing early.

In election news, the mayoral candidates held their second debate and questioned one another, raising speculation about how possible alliances in ranked-choice voting might play out. Who do you think is courting Safaรญ?

More soon,

Sara
