Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Parents and staff charge that the San Francisco school district has been dismantling programs for immigrant children, writes Joe Eskenazi. Read how the district used “backdoor attempts” to cut newcomer education as it tried to shave money from its budget.

In fact, writes Marina Newman, an analysis of the overall SFUSD budget shows that proposed staffing cuts would disproportionately hit small, low-income schools the hardest. It’s a sharp change: for more than 15 years, the budget deliberately provided additional funding for the highest-need students.

For the back story, see our reporting on how the school board unanimously rejected the proposed budget โ€”but SFUSD re-submitted it anyway, sending principals into a “panic.”

More soon,
