Good afternoon!
Well, that was quick. A week after Beya Alcaraz was sworn in as Mayor Daniel Lurie’s pick for D4 Supervisor —and a few hours after Mission Local published compromising texts from her about potential tax dodges—the 29-year-old political newbie resigned.
Joe Eskenazi analyzes the whole strange and terrible saga—and then looks at what it means for the mayor. As he writes, “It was a hell of a move for a mayor who will next year be asking the city’s voters for more power, including the ability to unilaterally hire and fire people.”
For back story: we dug into the data and found out that Alcaraz was the least experienced supervisor appointee in 30 years.
And in other news: Sources say that SFUSD superintendent Maria Su will be made the permanent superintendent and have her contract extended for another two years. Su, who has the support of Mayor Lurie but no experience as an educator, has faced harsh criticism from both the principals’ and teachers’ unions in the past few months.
More soon,
Sara
