Good morning!

In the we-can-do-better spirit, I want to rethink the daily newsletter that for many years we have automated. Maybe that is better – it is certainly easier, but, hey, let’s give this a try. A ver.

We’ve had some great pieces so far this week including Joe’s column on the mayor’s bewildering opposition to Prop H, which would move the city’s major races to even years – vastly increasing the number of people who will vote. The mayor is unenthusiastic. Joe tells us why.

If you are wondering about our progress on 1,000 new donors, we are at 485. It’s only a matter of time. So sign up here if you haven’t yet. And thank you to all who have already done so. (I’m going to find a better way to report our progress.)

If you have ideas for the newsletter, pass them on to me at lydia.chavez@missionlocal.com. Also, we are looking for someone to work parttime on social media and posting. So let me know if that is your expertise.

A recommendation: Even if you find poetry baffling, the Poetry for All podcast by Joanne Diaz and Abram Van Engren is delightful – and soothing.

Enjoy the day,

Lydia

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
