Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Crime is down in San Francisco, but fear of crime is going up: and it’s central to mayoral candidate Mark Farrell’s campaign. We’re following Farrell this week, who seems to be more interested in sentiment than data. “Just ask anybody in the city if they feel safer,” he told Mission Local.

For a little back story, here’s just one piece about crime from the time when Mark Farrell was in office as a supervisor (and briefly as a caretaker mayor.) He now says “public safety wasn’t much of a concern” in the old days. Skim our reports of shootings, stabbings, and assaults from 2011-2018 to see what you think.

Speaking of crime, we asked the candidates for supervisor in D5 if they believe Mayor Breed’s proposal to deter drug dealing in the Tenderloin by shutting down corner stores at midnight will work. Not everyone’s convinced.

The SF International Arts Festival is bringing more than 1oo different performances to venues around the Mission, beginning tomorrow, through May 12. Music, dance, performance, filmโ€”check out the whole schedule.

More soon,

Sara
