Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

San Francisco is laying off the community ambassadors hired through the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs, writes Oscar Palma. In the area around 16th and Mission, including Marshall Elementary School, the city has been subcontracting private firms instead.

Oscar’s also got a really interesting piece on Sam Devdhara, who’s figured out how to make money buying run-down properties and renting them as SROs or to nonprofits. “The low-income housing market, which is often subsidized by local, state and federal government, stays always consistent,โ€ Devdhara said.

In election news, a state ethics complaint alleges that Matt Mahan, the mayor of San Jose who’s running for governor, illegally coordinated with the PAC backing his campaign. Joe Eskenazi and Joe Rivano Barros report on the allegations against billionaire donors Michael Moritz and Rick Caruso.

Eleni Balakrishnan looks at the recent assessment by the S.F. Department of Public Health confirmingย Mission Local’s reporting about the safety failures that contributed to the killing of a social worker in December. DPH also confirmed that, as we wrote, hospital workers, not a sheriffโ€™s deputy, were theย first to respond to the attack.

More soon,

Sara
