Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Well, it was quite a dramatic weekend for the SF public schools. At an emergency meeting on Sunday, the Board of Education voted not to terminate the embattled Superintendent, Matt Wayneโ€”at least for now. But the city is sending high-level support to the troubled school district, including a team of experts to look over Wayne’s shoulder, and financial help.

How did we get into this mess? And what does it mean for the proposed school closures? Joe Eskenazi reports on the next steps, and what parents, Board of Ed members, and lawyers are saying.

Oh, and in case you forgot, there’s a school board election. Ten candidates spoke at a forum Friday night; read what they think about the central office, closures, and school lunches.

Total fundraising for SF’s November election has reached over $37 millionโ€”in a city of just about 504,000 voters. Joe Rivano Barros is talking tonight at a League of Women Voters forum about money in San Francisco politics: Reserve your space now.

And if you don’t want to think about politics for a minute, try the Lindy Hop class followed by a dance party at the Verdi Club tomorrow night. See our whole events calendar here.

More soon,

Sara
