Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! There’s a lot of news today about a potential San Francisco teachers strike, and we’ll continue to follow and update the story.

The nonbinding report from a state fact-finding panel has been released, allowing the S.F. teachers union to call a strike for as early as Monday. The report recommends some pay raises, but not dependent healthcare, and fails to resolve struggles over SFUSD’s reserve funds, leaving the district and the union still at an impasse.

As the strike looms, the school board narrowly voted last night to give Superintendent Maria Su “emergency powers to hire additional security staff to keep schools open if teachersโ€”and possibly principalsโ€”walk out.

Ahead of the board meeting, Marina Newman writes, SFUSD yanked an item off the agendaโ€”its deal with OpenAI to provide 12,000 users across the district with โ€œChatGPT EDU.” Board members had raised concerns about approving a contract with so many details hidden, including the total cost of the package.

Elsewhere, Mission street food vendors rallied against proposed new regulations that they fear could put them out of business.ย Vendors told Oscar Palma the cost of getting a pushcart with a washing station, and doing most cooking at a certified commissary kitchen, could be as much as $40,000.ย

More soon,

Sara
