Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

It’s Friday, so that means a new comic strip by Neil Ballard! And as he shows, we cover the Tenderloin now—as well as neighborhoods across the city. Sign up here for our hyper-local newsletters.

Kelly Waldron looks at the money behind the D2 race for supervisor, where appointed incumbent Stephen Sherrill has raised over $1 million for the June primary, mostly from PACs bankrolled by allies of Mayor Lurie.

Another appointee running for supervisor, D4’s Alan Wong, also raised most of his $340,000 from PACs backed by Lurie’s allies. Junyao Yang has details on Wong’s neck-and-neck fundraising race with Natalie Gee.

And state senator Scott Weiner is going heavy on the house parties as he campaigns for a Congressional seat. Io Yeh Gilman follows him to a shoes-off gathering, where Weiner talks to parents about education, housing, and his changing views on Israel and Gaza.

The San Francisco International Arts Festival opens next week, with more than 50 artists from nine different countries. Andrew Gilbert gives a preview of some of the dance, theater, music, and, yes, circus events coming to the Mission.

More soon,

Sara

“Outside interest groups plan to spend record-breaking sums trying to buy my opponent this seat he was not elected to.”

Scott Wiener’s congressional campaign strategy: 5 house parties a week

“Well, first we need to, like, not eliminate the Department of Education.”

Two men in suits stand in front of microphones from various news outlets, addressing the media outdoors with people gathered in the background.

Supervisor Alan Wong has $540K backing D4 campaign, much from Lurie’s wealthy allies

“Every time there’s a news article that comes out that I don’t have any money, I get money.”

We Cover the Tenderloin Now

A man in a butcher’s hat talks to a computer about news coverage. The computer clarifies it covers San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, not meat cuts.

A group of women in colorful traditional attire stand in a circle, joining hands and looking down towards the camera against a clear blue sky.
