Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:
The Alice Griffith projects, built in 2019, were supposed to transform dilapidated public housing into successful mixed-income developments. But the Bayview complex has failed 129 Housing Authority inspections in the last year, sinking its finances deeper into a hole.
Meanwhile, in a city strapped for decent housing, Mayor Lurie has proposed eliminating the code enforcement program for decrepit residential hotels. It’s a crumb of $4.8 million in a $15.6 billion budget, but Joe Eskenazi shows why it matters so much.
And the head of a legal aid nonprofit that faces elimination in Lurie’s budget started a hunger strike today, asking the Supes to reverse the cut.
ICE update: Lawyers say the the Department of Homeland Security is trying a new tactic: dismissing asylum-seekers’ cases, putting them in “legal limbo” so ICE can deport them quickly. Joe Rivano Barros reports on how local immigration lawyers are responding.
More soon,
Sara
