Red Poppy Art House: The Family Art Program (Arte entre familia) – Eclipse Adventure: Discovering Science through Art

The Family Art Program at The Red Poppy Art House brings free access to quality art activities to neighboring families in the Mission district of San Francisco.

For this Family Art class, Join Luana, a NASA Solar Eclipse Ambassador, for an immersive journey in preparation for the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th. Through bilingual presentations blending science, cultural astronomy, and poetry, we’ll explore the wonders of solar eclipses. Dive into diverse cultural interpretations, uncover the science behind the phenomenon, and engage in interactive activities. Let’s celebrate the art and science of eclipses together!

The Family Art Program is a safe and creative space for children, youth, and parents to explore art.
All ages are welcome and the program is bilingual.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:

Luana Melnek dos Anjos, a planetarium presenter at Morrison Planetarium, blends her passion for astronomy with community engagement as a Solar Eclipse Ambassador with NASA. While pursuing her studies in astrophysics at San Francisco State University, she actively contributes to social causes, embracing the intersection of art, mindfulness, and science. Luana seeks to ignite curiosity and foster connections across diverse backgrounds. https://linktr.ee/astrolatinx

Sofia Elias (she/her/ella) is a passionate educator and holistic community builder. She has been working with families in the Mission community since 2013. She is a Psychology graduate from SFSU, an artist/musician, and a holistic community organizer. She has always been an advocate for using art as a healing and transformative tool to support communities. She has worked as a bilingual early childhood/youth educator for over 5 years using play-based and child-guided teaching as a way to promote social-emotional learning and development. In her free time, she plays music, spends time at the Jardin Secreto tending to plantitas, and supports birthers in postpartum care ceremonies. Sofia is a bilingual radical musician, ready to share art with all of the community!
