20th Annual CubaCaribe Festival of Dance & Music: Mirando atras, moviendo pa’lante/Looking back, Moving forward
A mixed program of six diverse pieces that were chosen based on their artistry and impact from past festival performances over the last 20 years by artistic director Ramón Ramos Alayo and executive director Jamaica Itule Simmons.
Acclaimed Bay Area Caribbean and Latinx performing artists featured are Alayo Dance Company (Afro-Cuban Modern), Arenas Dance Company (Afro-Cuban Folkloric), Los Lupeños de San José (Mexican Folkloric), Cunamacué (Afro-Peruvian), Alafia Dance Ensemble (Afro-Haitian), Moving Juntos (Cuban Youth Ensemble).
The Festival Performances will take place at ODC Theater (the mixed program) April 10-12 and Bay View Opera House (Aguacero program) April 17-18. Community and educational programs include: A lecture/demo at Museum of African Diaspora, Una peña at CANA: Indigenous Peoples Cultural Arts and Healing Center, A Batey and Artist Q & A at La Peña Cultural Center, drum & dance workshops at ODC Theater & Dance Mission Theater.
We are incredibly proud and honored to still be showcasing amazing traditional, often unseen, master artists through performances, community engagement and educational outreach activities over the course of the festival’s 14 days.
