From Robert Brust at Dolores Park Works:

Dolores Park Works has organized a replanting of the Miguel Hidalgo flower bed, Tuesday, September 14, 10 a.m. This is the first of what we hope will be a continuing and building effort to support and enhance the gardens of Dolores Park. All gardeners or wannabees are welcome.

Adrian Fields, the supervisor for the Mission area parks and is coordinating this project. He identified the need to redo the bed when we asked for a volunteer garden project and I thought it was so fitting, as this month marks the 200th anniversary of the start of the fight for the Independence of Mexico.

We have also obtained generous support from Flora Grubb Nursery, for design and discount on the plants. Allison Cummings, senior registrar SF Arts Commission has evaluated both the Hidalgo statue and the Liberty Bell and has brought in an art conservator. Joe Padilla, supervisor Rec and Parks paint shop, has repainted the back wall and is now going over the entire park. The Consulate General of Mexico will preside over a solemn ceremony at the Hidalgo statue Thursday, September 19 at 11 AM.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
