Good afternoon!
Well, Rep. Nancy Pelosi has made it official: after 20 terms, she won’t be running for re-election. Joe Eskenazi looks at the contenders who will now be fighting to represent San Francisco, which the speaker emerita called “heaven on earth.”
Beya Alcaraz, a 29-year-old Sunset native with no political experience, is Mayor Daniel Lurie‘s pick to fill the seat of recalled District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio. Junyao Yang and Xueer Lu talk with politicos and Sunset residents about the challenges she faces.
And the Board of Supervisors grilled private prison operator Geo Group for nearly three hours over allegations of neglect and abuse at a San Francisco halfway house where a resident, Melvin Bulauan, died in July. Eleni Balakrishnan reports on the emotional hearing.
See our back story on Bulauan’s death.
More soon,
Sara
