Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

A 33-year-old man was found dead inside a cell at the crowded city jail on Seventh St. this morning, and deputies from the San Bruno facility were allegedly brought in to help with staffing. The jail population has reached its highest total since 2020โ€”over 1,200 dailyโ€”under Mayor Daniel Lurie.

After President Trump defied a federal court order to invoke the Alien Enemies Act and to deport 200 Venezuelans to prisons in El Salvador, Japanese-Americans and their allies rallied in San Francisco. They cited the history of arrests and incarceration of Japanese-American citizens and residents, without due process, during the Second World War.

People have a lot of opinions about illegal vending and drug sales around the Mission’s BART plazas. But it’s not clear that opinions lead to solutions. We show the multitude of tactics the city’s tried over the last 2 yearsโ€”more cops, more permits, no permits, fences, meetings, indoor markets, total bans, new lawsโ€”and report on their efficacy. Take a look at our interactive timeline.

More soon,

Sara
