Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

As Mission Local reported yesterday, the police are ramping up arrests of drug users and homeless people, with a new pop-up site inSoMa. Today we’ve got a story about the expansion of SF jail beds at the San Bruno annex, as sheriffs anticipate more arrestsโ€“though not more staff. See how the city plans to address an influx of inmates, many with serious substance-abuse issues.

Sadly, we have plenty of back story on crowded, chaotic, and dangerous conditions in the city jailsโ€”in large part due to fewer deputies working in the jails, and more arrests of mentally ill and drug-addicted people. Just take another look at Joe Eskenazi’s scathing 2024 report on the “entirely predictable” crisis.

Well, Recology, which has a monopoly on the city’s trash collection, wants to raise rates againโ€“by a whopping 30%. Kelly Waldron explains what the company is trying to do after the city found it was overcharging residents last year.

More soon,

Sara
