Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

First of all, we’re almost there:

Mission Local has matching funds this month, and with just seven days left to go, we’re 91% of the way to our goal! Our deep thanks to everyone who’s contributed so far, including Jeanie Poling, Neena Dolwani, Marci Mills, and Art Agnos.ย Our reporting depends on you, our readers: Please donate today, and your gift will be doubled.

Now the news:

The Flower Lady has a new home! Denhi Donis, 66, known for sharing flowers at community events, was evicted from her Bernal home last year under the Ellis Act while recovering from cancer. Now, after months of near-homelessness, she’s found a permanent place with a neighbor.

Hundreds of low-income and homeless artists use the free studio space at the Community Arts Program in the Tenderloin. Now they’re fundraising to buy the entire building to establish a permanent home. They’ll be kicking off their campaign with an art auction June 5.

We’re asking regular questions of all the candidates for district supervisor: Today, D11 candidates explain how they’ll reach Asian communities, and D3 candidates weigh in on whether to extend the Central Subway. Only one said that “Havingย previously acquired a significant tunnel in Europeย equips me to lead this effort.”

If you’re in the Mission this weekend, enjoy Carnaval!

More soon,

Sara
