Manny’s: Steinhart Aquarium: 100 Years of San Francisco’s Beloved Aquarium

November 14, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
A man standing in an aquarium tunnel.

Have you marveled at the colorful fishes on a childhood field trip, watched an alligator feeding from mere feet away, or maybe shared a sweet kiss in the famed Fish Roundabout, once voted “The best make out in San Francisco” ?

This September marked 100 years of Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences, and we’re celebrating a century of charismatic animals, community memories, and cutting-edge scientific research.

Join Senior Director Bart Shepherd as he shares highlights from the aquarium’s one-hundred year history as a San Francisco cultural icon (with plenty of anecdotes about the illustrious and sometimes infamous animal residents). Plus, hear about the global research and conservation efforts being led by Steinhart’s unparalleled scientific dive team and researchers working to protect some of our most precious ecosystems.

Come celebrate an institution all San Franciscans can be proud of!

Bart Shepherd, Senior Director, Steinhart Aquarium

As Senior Director of Steinhart Aquarium, Bart Shepherd oversees the Academy’s 60,000 live plants and animals. Since 1997, Shepherd has held many positions at the Academy including aquatic biologist and curator and was named director of Steinhart Aquarium in 2011. During his tenure he has explored some of the most biodiverse coral reefs of the world and such explorations have catalyzed his passion for improving the conditions for species in the natural world.
