Community Music Center: Concert with Conversation: Ulysses Owens Jr., drummer

The free Concert with Conversation series features world-class musicians performing for the CMC Community. Each short concert is followed by a Q & A session, where the audience can learn about the lives, hard-work, and inspiration of these artists.

Ulysses Owens Jr. is a three-time GRAMMY Award-winning drummer who The New York Times has said “take[s] a back seat to no one,” and “a musician who balances excitement gracefully and shines with innovation.” The performer, producer and educator goes the limit in the jazz world and beyond, claiming 7 successful albums of his own. Owens has also gained special attention for his performances award-winning albums by Kurt Elling, the Christian McBride Big Band, Steven Feiftke, Bijon Watson and the Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra.

As an author Ulysses has authored the books titled: “Jazz Brushes for the Modern Drummer: An Essential Guide to the Art of Keeping Time,” and “The Musicians Career Guide: Turning Your Talent into Sustained Success,” released by Simon and Schuster. Ulysses also serves on the faculty at The Juilliard School and is the Artistic Director for his family’s youth empowerment non-profit organization, “Don’t Miss A Beat” in Jacksonville, Florida.

Featured musicians: Ulysses Owens Jr. (drums); guest musicians San Francisco Conservatory of Music students Mateyko Jazwinski (bass), Gene Wadsworth (piano), Carlo Rabano (trombone); and SFJAZZ student Skylar Tang (trumpet).
