On some Sundays Raul Lopez  will set up a canopy in the 24th and Mission BART plaza and give passersby free haircuts all afternoon.

His motivation? “This is just where I feel in my heart I need to give back to,” Lopez, a Mission native, said at his open air shop on March 29th.

This was the second major free haircutting event Lopez has held. It was co-hosted by Current Culture and Design, a local clothes company that donated free shirts to those who got haircuts.

A licensed barber, Lopez never charges for his cuts. During the day he works full time as a plumber, electrician, painter, and all-around handyman. “I’m an engineer by day, and a barber when it comes to giving back,” Lopez explained.

Moving forward, Lopez hopes to hold this event on a bimonthly basis.

“I’m going to do it as long as I can,” Lopez said. “Making a difference in someone’s life through a haircut…this is my goal.”
