I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

  1. There are numerous drunk thugs living and hanging outside on this block, every GD day. More towards 24th on the east side of Alabama. If it’s them, meh. If its their friends, meh.

    1. I was wondering that too. At 7am, there was police tape up and at least 5 police cars either in front or around the corner, and officers walking along Treat and 21st, up to a block away.

  3. The victims were not gang related at all, the shooting on 15th and Natoma was not a retaliation on part of those shot at on Alabama…#fact

  4. What’s the relationship between the shooter and the victims? Is it gang related? The police was around Treat @ 25th at 5:30pm, because a fight broke off between a guy with a dog and other people. Police were patrolling the area heavily.

  5. Over morning coffee, I thinking that’s too bad, At least the injuries don’t sound too bad, and it could have been much worse. Peoples lives have changed forever.
Still, I’m glad MissionLocal is there to keep us informed.
