The Mission’s own Roxie Theater, a San Francisco institution, is the city’s oldest continuously operating cinema. Recently it launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $60,000 to support its conversion to a nonprofit organization.

So far the project has raised $14,497, with 28 days left to go. Celebrities, including Baltimore-bred filmmaker John Waters, have publicly supported the campaign by producing short promotional films about the theater.

In an excerpt from his video, Waters tells viewers: “The Roxie is what moviegoing is all about. If you don’t give them money, you’re an asshole.”
