It’s 7 a.m, 46 or so° and headed to 68°. Details for the next ten days are here.

The Wire has a good piece looking at the bombastic letter to the WSJ editor penned by romance novelist and Venture capitalist Tom Perkins that compared the Google bus controversy to fascist Nazi Germany.

Bernalwood has some lovely Ashley Wolff illustrations documenting the lovely but freakish weather we have been having.

And if you must leave the Mission, it sounds like a day in Chinatown to celebrate the Chinese New Year may be in order. MuniDiaries reminds us of this.  We forgot to remind you of the Lunar Brunch at Rice Paper Scissors on Saturday, but coming up on Feb. 10, you will be able to eat lunch at its new brick and mortar spot at 1710 Mission Street from Monday to Wednesday.

Possibilities

1 p.m. Meet at the Women’s Building where Sf City Guides leads a free tour on murals and the multiethnic Mission.

1 p.m. Photobooth’s Instant Camera Walk.

8 p.m. Porchlight Series on Story telling at the Verdi Club. Theme: The Tough Crowd. $20.

SF Weekly’s Listings of Happenings at Mission Bars is here.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

At ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
