We’re sure you’ve heard by now that Obama endorsed gay marriage yesterday. Check out this New Yorker piece about why he couldn’t wait any longer to do so. Here’s an excerpt:

In some ways, it’s amazing that he was able to maintain a not-yes-but-not-no position for as long as he did. While it was a useful electoral strategy, changes in public opinion and in the culture have created a new reality. Obama’s political advisers badly underestimated the extent to which the marriage issue would remain at the forefront of the national discussion — and the determination of those of us who work to keep it there.

It’s Bike to Work Day! The SF Bicycle Coalition plans to have a bunch of energizer stations set up with coffee, drinks and snacks. Are you making the switch today?

The Chronicle has a story about something many of us who have looked for housing in the Mission know too well — rental competition is fierce.

And Curbed SF leaves us with a good question: What’s the deal with the lot on 15th and Dolores?

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
