Sweet Escape by Ariel Dovas

It’s 7 a.m., 53° and headed to 64°. Details for the next 10 days are here.

Los Angeles hosted CicLAvia yesterday, closing off 7.5 miles of streets to cars and opening them to pedestrians and bicyclists. An estimated 100,000 people showed up to participate — maybe it’s a sign that the city will become less car-dependent. See some cool photos.

Google has been charged with deliberately delaying an investigation into whether its cars were collecting personal data from wireless networks, writes the New York Times. The Federal Communications Commission fined the company $25,000 for failing to provide emails to help with the investigation.

The NYT also writes about the trend of new social networks that have gotten smaller and smaller. At sites like Path and Pair, “users can post information without fear of sharing with the wrong people.”

And Burrito Justice posted pictures of the new Dolores playground art. Do you like the koi fish, clouds or ants better?

Have a great week!

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
