I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.
As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

This sounds like a shooting that took place at Mariposa and Alabama last night. Were there two shootings? A bullet went into a residence on Mariposa and four cars were reportedly shot on Alabama. A man was shot in the leg. Automatic weapons were involved. There were a lot of police on the scene.
I can confirm that the shooting occurred at Mariposa and Alabama. (I don’t know why the Police report it at 16th.) I live in an Artists’ building that is on that corner and heard the shots and looked out the window and saw frightened people fleeing the scene. Also, several of my neighbors’ cars (building-mates) that were parked along Alabama at the corner of Mariposa were damaged by bullets. One has two bullet holes in her windshield and a bullet graze on the chassis. Another has extensive windshield and body damage to his truck. One guy was actually in his van (parked in that same row of cars) and narrowly missed being hit as a bullet penetrated his vehicle and passed behind his head and through the other side. A person (not from my building) was shot in the leg. The police have supposedly apprehended the shooters.
There is an after-hours night club in a restaurant right there on Mariposa (which typically lets out at right around 2am on weekend nights). This occurrence was much closer to that establishment. Not 16th street.

Living near by, I heard five to seven shots. Then a few minutes pass. Sirens are heard converging, then a gunfight ensues. 10 to 15 shots fired from a apparent gun battle. Pretty intense….
There has been an big increase of shooting in the Mission this year. What is going on? I asked the police on the street and they said there has been an increase but no one knows why.
Many of us who live in the neighborhood were woken up by the gunfire. Three to four volleys of shots. Rapid fire. 15-20 shots fired in all. It’s a miracle that only one person was hurt.
Sadly, this is third club related shooting over here in less than two years. This seems to be the nightlife that SF Entertainment Commission seeks to promote – invite bridge and tunnel folks to buy a couple of drinks and shoot up our community. I’m outraged.
